♦ The saga of Malcolm “Mac” Butner, Salisbury Realtor and Chairman of the Rowan County Housing Authority Board, continued Thursday as Mr. Butner snubbed the scheduled afternoon board meeting and a WSOC-TV channel 9 crew seeking an interview.
Late Wednesday afternoon the Rowan Free Press contacted Mr. Butner who informed us he had not sent an official letter of resignation to the Board of County Commissioners and intended to fight any attempt to remove him from his board chairmanship of the Rowan County Housing Authority Board. Mr. Butner also told us that in all his years as a realtor or as member of the Rowan County Housing Board he never practiced any form of racial, gender, or sexual orientation discrimination.
Thursday evening Mr. Butner told the Rowan Free Press: “I’m the target of a political smear campaign by those who wished to derail my signature gathering to get on the ballot to run for Rowan County Commissioner. It’s absurd–everybody who knows me, knows I’m not prejudiced. I’m an ardent supporter of Dr. Ben Carson and believe he would make a fine president. Think the world of Bill Cosby. Often quote one of our greatest conservatives Thomas Sowell. Everybody I know has heard me tout Thelma Lucky’s Restaurant at the Mall. As for women I have great admiration for them.”
“I’m Mac. I tell it like it is. That’s just me.”
Mr. Butner reminded us he had not received any complaint concerning racial discrimination filed with the Greensboro Field Office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He said other members of the board did.
When the Rowan Free Press spoke with Mr. Butner about several of his Face book posts, he said that he had made them, that they were true, and he saw no harm in making them. He claimed his political enemies were trying to use them against his campaign. He told us it was fine with him to repost them so the public could make their own conclusions. Here they are:
