♦ The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education meets Thursday July 10th at 4 p.m. at the administrative offices at 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer. This meeting is open to the public.
The board will meet with their attorney to discuss policy 6-8 which concerns non-curriculum after school clubs. The school board desires to better understand the policy change that previously allowed gay-straight alliance clubs.
While no public commentary is scheduled for Thursday’s meeting, board member Chuck Hughes plans to make a motion to have the meeting open to public commentary.
At the June 26th school board meeting 11 persons spoke against changes in Policy 6-8 while no one showed up to speak up for the changes.
Newest updates to policy 6-8 remove language prohibiting sexually oriented clubs such as the Gay-Straight Alliance. According to sources in the school system Policy 6-8 must comply with North Carolina and federal law.
The school board is also expected to vote on a continuing budget resolution. Because the N.C. House has not yet passed the state budget, the board will vote on whether or not authorize the superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody to operate the school district until the budget resolution can be presented. Dr. Moody possesses the authority to approve funds based on last year’s budget save for salaries, child nutrition, and capital outlay.
On Thursday the board will review district policies regarding technology including employee use of social media, internet safety, and the responsible use of technology.
