♦ According to sources at the Rowan County Courthouse, Rowan County District Attorney Brandy Cook will seek the death penalty for Khari DeWayne McClelland, 23, of Harmony, N.C. and Jaylend Daquann Turner, 19, of Statesville for the December murder of Marcus “Marco” Kaufman, 25, a volunteer fireman from Woodleaf in West Rowan. The two accused murderers are housed with no bond in the Rowan County Detention Center.
Marco Kaufman, as he was known to his friends, was senselessly murdered when he arrived at a break-in in progress at his home December 2, 2013. Upon seeing what appeared to be a car broken down in his driveway with two men nearby, Kaufman took his wife to a neighbor’s home and returned a short time later to help. When Marco inquired if the men needed, he was shot in the head inside his vehicle. Marco clung to life for several weeks in a hospital before finally succumbing. His murder drew attention throughout North Carolina for its coldblooded nature.
Marco’s wife Maryann, pregnant at the time of the shooting, later gave birth to a son.
Michael Dwayne Teasley, 25, and Tramel Devon Hart, 18 remain in the Rowan County Detention Center where they are charged with being accessories after the fact of a first-degree murder. Both Men are being held on a $1.5 million dollar bond.
