RFP Research

♦After a brief search online, we found the City of Salisbury’s “project book” for the proposed RSSS downtown Central Office, which was recently employed for bidding purposes.  Every last detail of the Taj Mahal is shown in all its taxpayer wasting glory in this 522 page PDF.  Salisbury taxpayers will have a special interest in the details of this white elephant, alleged to attract economic development and millions in investment to Salisbury’s South Main tenderloin.  Just like Fibrant, this money pit was pitched to our local government marks.  Sadly, Fibrant’s magnetic economic and business pull never materialized.  Instead, our floundering municipal fiber optic network turned into an epic debacle.  Today, we have its vapor trail: the meltdown of our city’s financial core, a tsunami of city’s employee terminations and “resignations”, and in turn the loss of major city services. Luckily for those dwelling in the 107th ranked city/town for livability in North Carolina, Project Taj Mahal faces our state’s Local Government Commission.

The Taj Mahal, a school administration building, is quite a stretch to qualify as economic development according to state statutes.  Further, the Taj’s 35 month lease will likely be seen as a sleezy way to dodge state statutes and as a bad business practice.  Salisbury could be left holding the bag if the school system hikes its administrators elsewhere.

We at the Rowan Free Press completely support building of the Taj for its original intended purpose: a convention center.  With few attractions in our city, the Taj could become a non-stop a venue for tough man competitions, x-treme cage fighting, roller derby, broken down rock and country acts, and “alternative” bingo.  A win-win for the city!  Should we mention the possibility of a Casino? Hey, if they can build casinos on Indian reservations, why not on a superfund site?
