Letter-to-the-Editor: Best Advice

Chuck Hughes, Salisbury, N.C.

♦ After reading my posting on the RFP, “To Vote or Not to Vote”, criticizing him for joining the other commissioner candidates (except Chris Cohen) in signing the letter to the County Commissioners asking them not to sue the city, Greg Edds called me. Regretfully, this was a courtesy I denied him before posting my letter. Instead, I took the liberty of questioning his motives without the facts to support my insinuations.

The reasons he gave for signing the petition were just as valid as were my reasons for him not signing the document. The difference in opinion seemed to be the level of trust each of us invested in expectations that the city would suddenly see the light, put away past rancor and honestly negotiate the issues surrounding the West End Plaza just because a new board of commissioners was seated.

I admit my pessimism is born out of the deceit and underhandedness I experienced during the BOE “negotiations” with Salisbury City over the site for a Central Office Building. I will not again make the mistake of making unfounded assumptions about the source of Greg’s optimism.

Will our conversation motivate me to reconsider my voting options? It really doesn’t matter in the long run. Whether I put an X by Greg’s name or not will not decide the outcome of the election. What is important, however, is that we all get the facts before making judgment. Good advice that I need to adhere to.
