♦ Rowan County Sheriff’s Office was alerted Friday when a suspicious package containing a pipe bomb was found at Southeast Middle School at 1570 Peeler Road. A pair of 13-year olds, who were since suspended, constructed the bomb which was removed from the school premises by the Cabarrus Bomb Squad.
A school resource officer was called to investigate the suspicious package containing what was viewed as an improvised explosive device. Soon investigators from Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad arrived on the scene. The two 13-year-old males were interviewed and charges were filed against the students for felony possession and manufacturing of a weapon of mass death and destruction, also possession of a weapon on school grounds.
Both students were interviewed and their homes were checked out. No other explosive devices were found. The two boys planned to detonate the device in a wooded area near one of the student’s homes.
Southeast Middle School Principal Jennifer Lentz sent out a message to parents, staff, and students alerting them that a suspicious package with unknown capabilities were found on the school’s premises.
