♦ The Rowan Salisbury School Board will request $1,023,277 from Salisbury’s City Council at Tuesday’s 4 p.m. meeting to help defray costs for the Central Office project at 500 N. Main Street in Salisbury. Funding is being requested for the Central Office dome installation ($341,115), parking lots ($368,915), stormwater drainage ($236,315), sidewalks ($44,382), wastewater taps ($15,000), Main Street parking spaces ($10,000), water meters/associated taps ($5,000), and a fire hydrant ($2,500).
The Central Office project at 500 N. Main is being pitched to City Council as increasing economic activity in the neighborhood businesses on the periphery of downtown Salisbury and construction activity done by non local contractors.
Some Salisbury taxpayers are questioning the city forking over money for a frivolous dome which might be lost from view in its downhill position at 500 N. Main Street. It was once believed a city philanthropic foundation would foot the bill for an “extraterrestrial” green dome now being seen as being out of character in a neighborhood containing Richard’s BBQ, an orthopedic shoe store, and a dominating nearby water tower. So much for old Salisbury charm.
