♦ At yesterday’s 4 p.m. meeting of the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education at N. Ellis Street the board voted 5 to 1 to authorize the purchase more property on the 500 block of North Main. Voting for the purchase were Richard Miller, Jean Kennedy, L.A. Overcash, Kay Wright Norman, and Susan Cox. Chuck Hughes voted against the purchase. Josh Wagner was absent.
The property authorized to be purchased is the Shulenburger property which will be paid for by the owner of Richard’s BBQ (Richard Monroe) who made a verbal agreement to pay for 60% of the property while the remaining 40% will be paid for by the Rowan-Salisbury Schools. The price of the property was listed at yesterday’s meeting as $248,000 (see PDF. below). Monroe would pay $150,000 while the school system would pay $118,000. Demolition of buildings on the present property is estimated to cost $20,000.
At least one member of December’s incoming board has doubts about the validity of the property agreement. They believe the school system must own the property and have funding in hand to make a legally binding agreement.
