♦ Rodney Roberto Wallace, 47, accepted a plea agreement and plead guilty to first degree murder for the June 11th 2014 death of his former wife Toney Ann Johnson, 34, of Spencer. Wallace will get life sentence without parole. Proceedings took place in Rowan County Superior Court this afternoon.
Last June Wallace stabbed his former wife 28 times in her chest abdomen, arms, shoulders, head, and wrist with a pocket knife and left her in a yard between two houses. She was living at the time at her parents’ home at 705 Fourth Street in Spencer, N.C. Johnson and Wallace had lengthy history abuse. In January of 2014 Johnson divorced Wallace. They had a 4 year-old son together.
A neighbor witnessed the attack believing it was a beating at the time. She called for Wallace to stop and threated to call the police. Wallace replied: “Go ahead.” When he finally let up, he walked on down the street.
After the stabbing, Wallace returned to his apartment a short distance away where he washed up and changed his clothes. He phoned his girlfriend and requested to be driven to Wrightsville Beach to meet his daughter before turning himself in. At first his girlfriend did not believe Wallace, until she received a “text” from someone saying that Wallace was being sought by Police.
Wallace asked her to drive him to Wrightsville Beach to see his daughter before turning himself in. He told the girlfriend he’d killed his ex-wife, but she did not believe him until receiving a text message from someone who verified that Wallace was wanted by police.
Vincent Rabil, Wallace’s lawyer, told the court his client was remorseful. Wallace also told the court he was remorseful and it was something he’d carry for the remainder of his life.
