Broadband Technology Report (BTR)/BTR Staff Report
♦ Here is another article on the recent Pivot Group survey of 800 current U.S. Internet users that should offer serious pause for municipal broadband providers attempting to sell 1 Gbps internet services. This challenge is especially problematic for a struggling city unlikely to attract high-tech entrepreneurs or large businesses requiring 1 Gbps internet. The Pivot Group survey underscored a major hurdle for 1 Gbps internet providers: They faced an Everest-like task in both marketing and customer education. 87% of the survey’s respondents never heard of a “gigabit” prior to the survey and only 32% of the internet users surveyed even knew the speed of their internet connection. To top it all 74% of those internet users surveyed indicated their current Internet speeds met their needs or exceeded their needs. The Pivot Group survey, which you can read in full below in the Broadband Technology Reports article, should serve as smelling salts to those attempting to pitch 1 gigabit speeds or even 200 Mbps speeds.
