♦ Sunday at 1:15 p.m. a four alarm blaze out at Mid-State Manufacturing at 2960 Corriher Grange Road in Mt. Ulla, N.C. The fire rapidly spread through the building and sent flames high above the structure’s roof. Originally called in as a 2 alarm fire, by 3:30 p.m it became a 4 alarm battle. An estimated 10 area fire departments assisted in fighting the blaze over a 7 hour period.
Dark gray smoke heavily blanketed the area and at times heavily obscured visibility both inside and outside the building. Earth moving machinery was brought in to knock down a wall. One firefighter, suffering from smoke inhalation, was transported from the scene to the hospital.
The fire’s cause is yet to be determined. Hot spots were being focused upon later in the day. Fire and smoke damage to the building is extensive.
Mid-State manufactures metal components. In May 2014 Mid-State Manufacturing was acquired by Impulse Manufacturing in Dawsonville, Georgia. Some 80 persons are employed at the West Rowan facility. None were in the building at the time of the fire.
