♦ This morning at the 10 a.m. Dunbar Center Fire Press Conference, held at East Spencer’s Town Hall, Mayor Barbara Mallet announced the fire’s cause was undetermined. Hopefully parts of the landmark Dunbar Center building can be salvaged.
Rowan County Fire Marshal Deborah Koontz Horne spoke during the press conference. She believes the fire started on the building’s Northside and that someone inside the building started it. No motive for the fire is known. It may have been accidental. There is no way of knowing if the fire was set intentionally to devastate the building or if it was set just to keep warm. It might’ve been kids messing around. The damage to the building is so severe that it makes it difficult to know who is responsible.
In the days prior to the fire, squatters were seen coming and going from the Dunbar Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
