Letter-to-the Editor: Salisbury’s Anti-Car Crackpotism is Nothing New. Downtown’s Death Rattle Began When They Ended “Cruising”

♦ Downtown Salisbury really topped themselves in the screwball department with this “Complete Streets” Program costing 4 million dollars of wasted taxpayer money.  You’d think those people would notice the tidal wave of vacancies along Main Street and the lack of anyone going there.  Seriously anybody in their right mind would do something to actually attract people down there like recruit chain stores or a Trader Joe’s.  No they want to make Downtown Salisbury “car free”.  Good grief how in the world do they think people are going to get to Downtown Salisbury from the county or from outside “8 block”?  Do those shopkeepers want to shoot themselves in the foot?  No cars equals no people.  Knock-knock–anybody home?

Look Downtown Salisbury’s anti-car attitude is nothing new.  Downtown Salisbury started going down hill when they ended “cruising” back in the day.  That stopped young people from going there.  When they did that it killed Downtown Salisbury.  Young people make a place look alive.  What that was all about was not wanting county people to destroy their so-called historic charm.

The anti-car attitude was continued when they refused to have any sort of parking down there.  Now they topped themselves with “Complete Streets”.  These brainiacs are going make the streets safe for pedestrians and bicycles?  Like any pedestrians or bicycle people are going to go down their to buy recycled junk?  Or get their butt kicked in a street mugging because they are on foot.

Making East Innes safer with traffic calming?  Winos will still be staggering across that street in the dark.  Maybe stumble over a median now.

Friday Night Out in ghost town.
