♦ Kymello McClean, an 8 year-old 2nd grader at Overton Elementary in Salisbury, fell through the ice and drowned in an icy pond at Elizabeth Holmes Hurley Park several blocks from Novant Health Medical Center.
The Salisbury Fire Department arrived after being called to Hurley Park and pulled the youngster from the freezing pond sometime around 2:50 p.m. They employed rafts and floatation equipment during their rescue attempts. Rowan Emergency Medical Services attempted to resuscitate the youngster with CPR before he was transported to Novant Health Medical Center in Salisbury. He was pronounced dead there.
The youngster was said to be playing with two 11 year-old friends when the incident occurred. The two made attempts with sticks to pull their friend Kymello from the pond and also called 911.
