Press Release

♦ Raleigh, N.C. –  Members of the North Carolina Senate returned to Raleigh Wednesday morning to begin their 2015-2016 legislative session with a swearing in ceremony.  Sen. Tom McInnis (R-Richmond County) was joined on the Senate floor by his wife Janice, daughter Mary Anne Meacham, son-in-law Jeff Meacham, and his two grandchildren Will and Olivia.  The oath of office was administered to the assembled Senators by North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Mark Martin.  Senator McInnis had already been sworn in early so that he could get to work right away in the days leading up to his first legislative session.

Sen. Tom McInnis R-Richmond County was sworn in on Saturday January 3rd for his first two-year term representing the 25th District in the North Carolina Senate. The oath of office was administered by Michael Huneycutt, clerk of court for Stanly County, in the Senator’s hometown of Ellerbe. Senator McInnis invited residents from each of the five counties in his district to take part in the ceremony.  Present were Ellerbe Mayor Lee Berry, the Rev. Alexis Perakis, of McDonald Baptist Church in Rockingham, Rep. Carl Ford (R-Rowan County), Scotland County Sheriff Ralph Kersey, and Cub Scout Pack 530 out of Peachland in Anson County. Altogether there were approximately 200 people present at the ceremony, which took place at Ellerbe Middle School.

Sen. McInnis: “I was deeply humbled by the large crowd that attend on a very cold and dreary day. We had citizens and elected officials from across the district for which I am very thankful. I look forward to representing the 25th Senate District as we work to make North Carolina a better place to live, work, and play. It is a high honor and I look forward to the task.” – Jan. 3rd Swearing In

Since January 3rd Sen. McInnis has been hard at work. In the past week, he has attended the Anson Hospital meeting on Medicaid, UNC Chapel Hill Senate Education Orientation, and the Educational Caucus in Kannapolis.

Sen. McInnis: “In attending the State Senate Orientation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Institute of Government I learned the process of taking an idea to the signing of a new law. We were taught by the best instructors that I have ever worked with. While we were given an immense amount of information in a short period of time it was a valuable learning experience. As I reflect on the total orientation, I am confident that I am prepared to go to Raleigh and be an effective member of the State Senate.” – Orientation

Senator McInnis was also appointed on Wednesday to the Agriculture/Environmental/Natural Resources Committee, Appropriations on Natural and Economic Resources Committee, Commerce Committee, Judiciary II Committee, Finance Committee and Program Evaluation Committee by Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham).
