♦Waffle House is coming soon to East Innes in Downtown Salisbury and will join Panera Bread as a major heavyweight among coffee, breakfast, and lunch spots. This popular 24 hour chain “restaurant” is coming as a real shot in the arm for economically beleaguered Salisbury and its vacancy filled downtown area.
It seems like only the other day when NIMBYs attempted to fight off Waffle House for allegedly attracting the wrong late night element. Waffle House and the land owner prevailed over this nonsense. Now coffee and breakfast will soon be had 24 hours a day downtown. Waffle Houses can be constructed in short order, so its opening should not be too far off. A sign on the construction site said: “Waffle House: Now Hiring Friendly Folks” A win for Salisbury, which is in desperate need of many. At least a few people will get jobs here.
With the city unlikely to sneak the school system’s central office past our State’s Local Government Commission, it might be a good time to change course at the property at 329 S. Main. Abate its groundwater contamination, and lure in some small chain retail or restaurants — something that might actually attract people to downtown. Perhaps a vertical amusement park or better still an Amazon.com warehouse. People are desperate for work in Salisbury.
