URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

...SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM TO IMPACT THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND
EXTREME NORTHEAST GEORGIA THROUGH TONIGHT...

.LOW PRESSURE TRACKING ACROSS THE DEEP SOUTH LATE THIS AFTERNOON
WILL PASS EASTWARD THROUGH THE CAROLINAS TONIGHT. A WINTRY MIXED
BAG OF PRECIPITATION HAS ALREADY SPREAD INTO THE FORECAST AREA...
AND THE INTENSITY OF THE PRECIPITATION SHOULD STEADILY INCREASE
INTO THE EVENING HOURS. SNOW AND SLEET FALLING EARLY IN THE EVENT
WILL GRADUALLY TRANSITION TO FREEZING RAIN FROM SOUTHWEST TO
NORTHEAST...AND POSSIBLY TO ALL RAIN ACROSS SOUTHERN SECTIONS.
SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW AND ICE ARE EXPECTED...
ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE WINTER STORM WARNING AREAS.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST
TUESDAY...

* LOCATIONS...THE NORTHERN FOOTHILLS AND NORTHWEST PIEDMONT OF
  NORTH CAROLINA.

* HAZARDS...HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ALONG AND NORTHWEST OF
  INTERSTATE 40...ALONG WITH SIGNIFICANT SLEET AND ICE
  ACCUMULATIONS MAINLY ALONG AND SOUTHEAST OF INTERSTATE 40.

* TIMING...SNOW AND SLEET WILL INCREASE IN INTENSITY AND
  COVERAGE THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS. THE PRECIPITATION WILL
  BEGIN TO MIX WITH FREEZING RAIN FROM THE SOUTH THIS EVENING.
  THE FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET SHOULD GRADUALLY TAPER OFF
  OVERNIGHT...BUT WITH A POSSIBLE TRANSITION BACK TO LIGHT SNOW
  ACROSS THE FOOTHILLS BEFORE ENDING.

* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES
  SOUTHEAST OF INTERSTATE 40...AND 3 TO 6 INCHES NORTHWEST OF
  THE INTERSTATE. ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH OF ICE IS
  EXPECTED... EXCEPT CLOSER TO ONE THIRD INCH IN SECTIONS
  SOUTHEAST OF INTERSTATE 40.

* TEMPERATURES...IN THE UPPER 20S.

* IMPACTS...HEAVY SNOW FALLING ON COLD ROADS...WITH SLEET AND
  ICE ACCUMULATIONS...WILL LIKELY CAUSE MAJOR TRAVEL PROBLEMS
  ALONG THE I-40 CORRIDOR LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW...
SLEET...AND ICE ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL
VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE.
