♦ Following a local news media’s report regarding yesterday’s GOP vote on a new leadership slate, some “amazing” comments were made at the end of the article. It seems some persons still find it difficult to comment on any political article without demeaning ex-commissioner, Jim Sides. After searching my memory for what little I remember from my 30 years working as a Psychiatric Physician Assistant, I came up with the word “fixation”. The definition and origin of this psychiatric term is very interesting.
Fixation: A psychological concept introduced by Sigmund Freud in 1905. Although Freud’s use of the term was specific to “anachronistic sexual traits,” later a broader use of the term evolved. The broader psychiatric use of fixation relates to individuals who become obsessed with an attachment to another person or thing and is manifested in immature or neurotic behavior. This begs the question: Why are some still fixated on Jim Sides despite his departure from public service?
I’m not suggesting that this definition applies to anyone’s comments, I’m just askin’.
