♦ A new “Home 2 Suites” Hotel by Hilton is planned for construction on a 1 I/2 acre property just off Jake Alexander Blvd. S. between Econo Lodge and I-85. The proposed extended-stay suite hotel will stand six-stories high and will contain 93 suite style rooms.
In a city with a serious surplus of motel and hotel rooms and marginal occupancy rates, the construction of yet another hotel is likely to bounce a less fortunate competitor or two. It wasn’t so long ago the Hotel Salisbury closed its doors to become part of Livingstone College. Vacant and abandoned motels dot the highways into “survival of the fittest” Salisbury. On the brighter side impoverished families, struggling to keep off the streets, might employ vouchers at motels cycling into a new arena of existence.
On Tuesday Narsi Development LLC. of Huntersville, N.C. will go before the City Planning Board at 4 p.m. and seek approval for a conditional District Overlay in order to construct a six-story suite hotel in an area zoned “commercial mixed use”. Such a zoning only permits four story buildings.
