♦ Donald Ray Morgan, 44, ISIS Disciple, Founder of the Islamic Center of Salisbury near Salisbury High School, a former Sheriff’s deputy, and who once shot up Las Palmas Restaurant in Salisbury, pleaded guilty in Federal District Court in Winston-Salem and today Judge Thomas Schroeder sentenced to him to 20 years and 3 months.
During today’s proceedings Morgan claimed he became overzealous and only wanted to go to Syria to defend somebody who can not defend themselves. He wanted to help innocent Muslims by acting in a humanitarian effort whether in a medical way or to rebuild a bakery.
The Federal prosecutor during the sentencing told the court that Morgan was waving a “black flag” for the enemy and on social media was condoning killing and beheading enemies as well as calling for jihad.
Morgan, according to the court knowingly attempted to provide support and resources starting in January 2014 to about Aug. 2, 2014, These services were provided to the Islamic State of Iraq known as ISIL or ISIS. On at least one occasion Morgan attempted to travel from Lebanon to Syria to join ISIL/ISIS. He employed Facebook and Twitter as well as a media interview to pledge his support for the group and its terrorist activities.
During today’s sentencing it was also pointed out that Morgan made a will leaving 10% of his estate to the Islamic State.
Last October the 30th Morgan was charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization (ISIS) and with the possession of a firearm by a felon. Morgan later in 2014 pleaded guilty to those charges. Today he was sentenced to 20 years plus 3 months for those charges.
