♦ Amber Denise Basinger, 21, of Rockwell and who attended Jesse C. Carson High School, RCCC, and UNCC, died tragically Friday as a passenger in a two vehicle collision in Rockewell, N.C. Two others were injured in the collision between a 2015 red Ford Mustang and a Ford Explorer at the intersection of Old Beatty Ford Road and Rockwell Road. The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m.
According to law enforcement a red Ford Mustang, driven by Faisal Abdulrahman Al-Julaipi, 18, a Kuwaiti student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, headed south on Rockwell Road and allegedly went through stop sign at the intersection. The Mustang slammed into the Ford Explorer going east on Old Beatty Ford Road.
Both drivers, Al-Julaipi and John Clifford Goodman, 44, of Albermarle, the Ford Explorer driver, were transported to Carolinas Medical Center Northeast in Concord and were reported to have sustained minor injuries.
Amber Denise Basinger was initially pinned in red Ford Mustang before firefighters removed a Mustang door to free her.
Al-Julaipi was later arrested and charged with death by vehicle (misdemeanor) and failure to stop for a stop sign (misdemeanor). Under a $50,000 secured bond, he is currently in the Rowan County Detention Center.
Responding to the accident scene were the Rockwell City Fire Department, Rockwell Rural Fire Department, Rowan EMS, the N.C. Highway Patrol, and the Rowan County Rescue Squad.
