♦This morning at 10 AM Rowan County Commissioners Jim Sides and Craig Pierce along with state Representatives Harry Warren and Carl Ford toured the Rowan County Recycling Center and inspected Rowan-County School System books and materials recently sent there. State Senator Andrew Brock joined the tour via smart phone. The 5 men inspected tables piled with usable books, children’s dictionaries, workbooks, and unused spiral bound notebooks.
Jim Sides looked through the books and materials and commented: “It’s a shame these books are not given to children who could make excellent use of them. I’d love to see these donated to our county library who might use them on their shelves or sell them at their annual book sales. There needs to be someway to get these to children and families.”
Rep. Carl Ford told us: “An eye-opener to be sure. Some great kids books. Children’s dictionaries to die for. Usable notebooks. Children and their families could benefit. Homeschoolers–church libraries–kids who need to learn to read or have nothing much to read in their homes. These books and materials need to find a way out into the public.”
Rep. Harry Warren, was excited about getting these books and materials into homes and libraries. “We saw some very usable books, textbooks, workbooks, and spiral-bound notebooks that could be reused. I know the county library said they would take these books either for resale to the public or place some on their own shelves. The workbooks could be sent home with children over the summer so they could continue to learn. A lot of children could use those spiral-bound notebooks. There were many good books for youngsters who have very few books in their homes and could profit from increasing their reading skills. We have to find a way to get these books and materials out to children and their families. These are excellent resources–these should not be recycled.”
