Melvin Dwayne Chalk, a Homeless Man, Died after Being Struck by a Car at MLK, Jr. Avenue and Cherry Street in Salisbury, N.C. Tuesday

♦ Melvin Dwayne Chalk, 56, a homeless man, died after being struck by a car at the intersection of MLK, Jr. Avenue and Cherry Streets in Salisbury just after midnight Tuesday.  Mr. Chalk was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Chalk, crossing at the intersection, is alleged to have stepped in front of an oncoming a 2004 Chevrolet car traveling at moderate speeds.  The car was driven by Kimber Ann Padgett, 24, of Salisbury.

At this time no charges have been filed.  The accident remains under investigation.
