♦On Monday November 18th at 6 p.m.the Rowan County Commission will hear the findings of an internal investigation of commissioner Jon Barber conducted by the county risk manager Yvonne Moebs and an independent panel of risk managers from other counties. The outcome of this internal investigation will affect possible censure of Jon Barber and any legal path it may follow afterwards. Back on September 16th the county commissioners voted 4 to 1 (commissioner Barber voting against) to move forward with the censure process of commissioner Jon Barber for the alleged misuse of county property a code of ethics violation.
Previously Commissioner Barber, an admitted alcoholic, was arrested for a pair of DWI’s as well as for shoplifting a $2.99 bottle of wine from a Rushco mini-mart. Rushco’s surveillance camera videos caught Mr. Barber pilfering a $2.99 bottle of wine from a display and ducking into a restroom. The store clerk became suspicious when Barber returned empty-handed from the restroom before picking up several items for purchase at the register. Immediately after Barber left the premises, the clerk entered the restroom and discovered an empty wine bottle. Apparently Mr. Barber consumed the bottle of wine within a few minutes span. The evidence and the surveillance video were turned over to the SBI. Mr. Barber was convicted of shoplifting and served a one year probation which ended this August.
Prior to his shoplifting conviction, Mr. Barber showed up intoxicated back in 2010 at his sixth grade social studies teaching job at Southeast Middle School. During this incident his young students text messaged their parents that Mr. Barber appeared drunk in class. The following day he resigned his teaching position and claimed to be “pursuing other interests”.
Also on the agenda will be a discussion of the deadline for Central Office decision.
