♦On Monday, December 2nd the Rowan County Commissioners met at 3 P.M. in their 2nd floor chambers at the Rowan County Administration Building on West Innes. The chamber was packed with people wanting to end the County’s practice of lethal gassing of unwanted animals and with individuals weighing in against the purchase of the Salisbury Mall. Many spoke during the public commentary period which can be seen on our video.
Highlights of the meeting’s video were:
• At the meeting’s outset both Chairman Jim Sides and Vice-Chairman Craig Pierce were voted back into the chair and vice-chair positions by a 4 to 1 vote. Jon Barber voted against both men.
• The Rowan County Commissioners, after reviewing the ethics investigation documents of County Risk Manager Yvonne Moebs and an independent panel of risk managers from across the state, decided 4 to 1 to send the Jon Barber case to the County District Attorney Brandy Cook. In passing the investigation onto the District Attorney, the county leap-frogged a possible censure “circus” concerning Jon Barber’s alleged misuse of the county photocopier, color toner, and paper for his Farm Fresh business during numerous early morning visits.
• A presentation by RowanWorks Director Robert Van Geons about “Project Glass”
• The County presented an audit by Martin, Starnes, and Associates who gave the county finances a clean bill of health.
• After a closed session meeting with attorneys, the commissioners voted to provide the Rowan-Salisbury Schools with $6 million dollars to build a Central Office any place of their choosing, save for 329 S. Main.
As a side note to last night’s meeting, the closing date is now December 16th. The county has several unresolved questions of a financial nature impeding the closing date going forward. The commissioners may call a special meeting later in December to discuss the current Mall owner’s response.
