♦Fibrant, the highly problematic city fiber optic network, was down for a time on Friday. Fibrant could not be reached for comment during this latest outage.
This outage comes as no surprise because the city and part time general manager Mike Jury warned everyone the network still struggled with some equipment, purchased by earlier management, that was liable to create major problems down the road. The city labeled Fibrant’s instability a “maturing” system. On Friday another outage happened, but nothing quite approaching the three day “Krakatoa” event in early summer 2012 where phones, internet, and TV service went down hard and made life miserable for a number of downtown Salisbury businesses still utilizing the fiber optic network. Fibrant is said to have achieved redundancy (backup) last year, yet redundancy is meaningless if major equipment fails to connect.
