Gene Miller, Candidate, Rowan-Salisbury
♦ In response to Mr. Chuck Hughes’s letters to Rowan Free Press on October 2 and October 19, 2016, I was disappointed and surprised to read about his false allegations and attacks. I retired from the school system in 2013. Mr. Hughes served on the board while I was employed and it was not until I challenged him for the school board that he became critical of me and my work.
I proudly devoted 30 years to public education and 15 of those to the Rowan Salisbury School System; a system that has given me so much including my own educational foundation.
During my tenure, we made tremendous accomplishments. In 2012, I secured funding for added security in our system and today, we have security cameras in all of our high schools, all of our middle schools and cameras and front door locks on all our elementary schools. We built 4 new schools and renovated and/or made major additions at all the other schools totaling approximately $400 million dollars, funded partially through a school bond in 2002 which I helped to get passed.
Mr. Hughes has pointed out that working for the superintendent and in the system is different from being on the board and he is absolutely right. I have a unique perspective from a career in public education that he does not. I understand the needs of our system and the people that are in it completely. I know how to work with our state government and I know what is possible from my institutional knowledge that can only be gained from many years of experience.
I stand proudly by my record and ask for your vote!
