Salisbury City Councilman Kenny Hardin
♦ I want to thank all those who came out to the City Council meeting last night. The room was filed to capacity with every seat occupied and people lining the walls at the entrances. There was even a large online audience watching locally and from other states. I saw so many familiar faces from Facebook and my community in the audience.
I appreciate the 30 individuals who came to the mic and passionately shared their views and concerns. I also appreciate the many who sent me text and inbox messages throughout the meeting. I also want to thank my friend James Meachem, head of the Tourism Bureau for accepting my request to come and share economic development news and info from his organization as to how it impacts the City.
As you will note in today’s Salisbury newspaper, I shared my feelings on the Council’s lack of engagement with citizens during public comments. I said I would refuse to adhere to this protocol in the future regardless of whether I be censured or gaveled. I’m happy my Colleagues agreed to take changing this mandate under advisement and revise/alter this policy moving forward.
Although many left by the end of the meeting, I wanted to ensure I expressed my strong feelings of discontent about the way in which citizens, specifically those in the Black community, have been criticized and talked down to in the wake of the murder of the 7 year-old Allen child. I also stated that the Black community needed to act as if Black lives really do matter to them as well.
Again, thank you to all for caring about your community and coming out to hold your elected representatives accountable.
