♦ Galen Lee Smith, 45, formerly of 1175 St. Peters Church Road in Gold Hill, will spend his life in prison after a 5 day jury trial where he was convicted of 24 felony counts of sex crimes with children. In the Rowan County Detention Center since April 2011 when he was arrested and placed on a $1,000,000 bond, Smith was sentenced by Judge Bragg to consecutive prison terms totaling a minimum of 178 years to 221 years. Judge Bragg issued Smith a permanent no-contact order with his victims.

Back in April 2011 Rowan County Sheriff Office detectives were notified by the victims family member that the children were sexually molested by Smith. The incidents were said to occur between 1997 and 2005 with two female girls under the age of 13. Smith was reported to perform sexual acts with the girls on a weekly basis. The children were forced to watch pornographic videos on Smith’s computer. Smith raped one of his victims on several occasions.
In April of 2011 the two victims, now adults, were interviewed separately by Rowan County Sheriff’s Office detectives which led to Smith’s arrest. The two also testified at Smith’s trial.
