♦ Breaking and entries appear to be growing at a steady rate in Salisbury, N.C. Partly the breaking and entries occur because of its of a lack of proper policing due to SPD’s gross understaffing, but often its Salisbury’s large population of transient vagrants, many hooked on heroin and meth, looking for a vacant houses and buildings (Salisbury has an estimated 2,900 vacant and abandoned houses spread throughout the city) in which to crash and do drugs. Salisbury also is encumbered by experienced lone wolf burglars and by professional B & E rings. Being caught usually means a short hitch in the slammer or probation. Often criminals can plea bargain because of the police department’s lack of experienced investigators and poor evidence gathering and storage.
Residents in all parts of the city face coming home to ransacked homes or garages or experienced their vehicles being broken into. No doubt many of us have neighbors who suffered from doors being kicked in or having their windows smashed to gain entry. Because of these breaking and entries, people are leaving Salisbury for safer destinations. It’s not just the shootings and armed robberies that make people feel unsafe. Our citizens are becoming tired of city hall’s lip service. While they are thankful for the assistance from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office coming into Salisbury and helping out, it’s simply not enough to overcome the violent and property crime here.

♦ According to sources on the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office John Everett Chriscoe, 46, a felon dwelling on the Streets of Salisbury, was arrested Thursday at 6:51 p.m. at 216 S. Craig Street for allegedly breaking into a building, larceny, uttering, and fraud. Chriscoe is allegedly part of the growing vagrant army who descend on the city and leave in their wake broken doors, shattered windows, and emptied homes. It’s a good bet that somewhere within a 3 to 4 block radius of where you are living someone is hunkering down in a vacant house or building biding their time until they have to come up with money for heroin, meth, and something eat.

Chriscoe was charged with breaking and entering–building (felony), larceny (felony), uttering a forged instrument (felony) and obtaining property by false pretenses (felony). Under a secured $5,000 bond, he is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center.

♦ According to sources in the Salisbury Police Department the Sunset Manor Apartments was a victim of a burglary–forcible entering on Wednesday at 210 Sunset Drive. The crime was reported to 911 dispatch at 9:30 a.m. The point of entry into Apt. 100 (business address) was through a side door. Reported stolen were $100 in cash, checks and money orders valued at $2, A computer bag ($80), assorted tools ($100), 18 keys ($10), and miscellaneous ($25). Total stolen items valued at $317. Damage to a door ($300) and lock ($25).
The burglary remains under investigation.
