♦ According to Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and Rowan-Salisbury School System Sources Mark Robert Dexter, 42, living in Granite Quarry and a math and social studies teacher at Charles C. Erwin Middle School, was arrested for alleged indecent liberties with a child at Erwin. Deputies arrested Dexter at his home Wednesday night on 105 Brookstone Way in Granite Quarry at 11:46 p.m. without a struggle, handcuffed him, and placed him into an awaiting Sherriff’s Office vehicle for the ride back to Salisbury and processing.
Charged with “indecent liberties with a student by a school guardian”, Dexter is being held under a secured $150,000 bond in the Rowan County Detention Center. His first court date is on Friday September 22nd.

According to sources this past Monday the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from the family of an Erwin Middle School student allegedly involved in exchanging inappropriate messages between a juvenile and Mr. Dexter. The two were said to communicate with each other by Facebook Messenger. The content of the messages allegedly pointed to an online relationship. The messages began on September 9th and appeared to indicate that Dexter was planning to have the student over to his house. No evidence exists that such a meeting ever took place.
The investigation alleges that over an 8 day period thousands of cellphone messages were exchanged between the student and Dexter. Evidence gathered from the victim’s and Dexter’s electronic devices, as well as Facebook, led to a warrant being obtained Wednesday charging Dexter with taking indecent liberties with a student.
The investigation is ongoing and will involve interviews with potential witnesses. It is possible that more charges may be pending. According to reports, the victim was not Dexter’s student, but knew him at school. Dexter allegedly admitted to an investigator to exchanging messages with the victim.
Yesterday Dexter resigned from his teaching position at Charles C. Erwin Middle School. He was with the Rowan-Salisbury School System for over 13 years.
