Some economic development hucksters claim that all roads lead to Salisbury, that Salisbury is the epicenter of the known universe. Their reasoning is lost on the staff of the Rowan Free Press. We might grant Salisbury is a major player in I-85 Crime Tourism. Criminals appear to be making the pilgrimage to Salisbury from surrounding counties, from South Carolina, even from far off states to rob, carry off metals and heavy machinery, truckjack, break into cars and houses or just to lay low from the law. Rather than the “Paris of the Piedmont”, Salisbury is viewed as easy pickings or a quiet place to blend in until the heat dies down elsewhere.
According to Salisbury Police sources Jeffrey Cummings Cone, 31, a convicted felon living at 627 Beech Drive, Lexington, N.C., allegedly tried his luck at Kohl’s Department Store, 1395 Klumac Road in Salisbury and was arrested for “larceny-shoplifting” on Thursday September 15th. Cone was alleged to have stolen a video recorder valued at $199. Shortly after Cone’s arrest in Salisbury, a mountain of charges from crimes allegedly committed in Davidson County were added to his Salisbury shoplifting charges. Under a secured $49,500 bond, Cone is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center.
