♦A complete video of today’s special meeting at 9 a.m. between the Rowan County Commissioners and the Rowan-Salisbury school board will be found below. Cordial at times, contentious at times, yet positive overall, the meeting exhibited some possible forward motion. The meeting ended at Noon with the ball in the school board’s court. The school board will study an offer from the county to fund $28.5 million in capital needs for a new Central Office, Knox Middle School improvements, and plans to build a new elementary school in the western part of the county.
The commissioners supported $28.5 million which was all they could fund without raising taxes in in the short-term future. The remainder of the requested money would come once a payment plan was considered and voted upon. The school board sought a commitment to fund $40 million in capital improvements to complete the three suggested projects.
A motion by commissioner Chad Mitchell to finance $28.5 million passed 4-1 with commissioner Jon Barber voting no. Soon after the vote the commissioners adjourned. The school board will continue deliberations at the school systems Ellis Street administration offices on Ellis
