♦This afternoon in open session at the Ellis Street Administration Building, according to sources within the school system, the school board led by Dr. Richard Miller voted 5-2 to reject the County Commissioner’s offer. Chuck Hughes and Josh Wagner voted for the county commissioner’s offer.
Chuck Hughes and Josh Wagner voted against the school board’s motion to approach Mediator Willis Wichard to declare an impasse so the school board might sue the county commissioners. Earlier the school board voted to reject the County Commission’s offer of $28.5 million dollars for capital improvements with more to come.
Voting for the impasse and opportunity to go to court were Richard Miller, Jean Kennedy, Susan Cox, Kay Wright Norman, and L.A. Overcash.
If mediator Wichard approves, the case could take many months to go to court if an appeal is filed by the county.
The vote to break the impasse and sue the county commissioners effectively is a vote by the school board to substantially raise Rowan County property taxes and once more stymie the forward motion on the Central Office.
