♦ We are seeking firsthand accounts of the September 1989 ”Sacking of Downtown Salisbury” during the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo. For several days the city was without power, light, and refrigeration. An estimated 20 or more stores were looted downtown, windows broken, and buildings were forcibly entered. Without electricity, no alarms worked. Local news, so as not to encourage more pillaging and assaults, maintained silence about the breakdown of law and order in Salisbury. This is an untold story.
