♦NC Senator Gene McLaurin ( D-Richmond) filed for re-election to the state senate today for District 25 which includes Anson, Richmond, Scotland, Stanly and a portion of Rowan County. McLaurin, 57, a businessman and former mayor of Rockingham was elected to his first term in 2012.
“It is an honor and privilege to serve as your voice in Raleigh and to ask for your support as I seek my second term. I am reminded of the trust you have placed in me and the responsibility to be a good steward of your taxpayer dollars and to help build a better region and state for our children and grandchildren. I love North Carolina and in particular this area where we have enormous potential, where natural resources are abundant, and where I have been able to raise my family, serve my community, run a small business and create jobs for our citizens. My family, my teachers, and my community taught me the values of hard work, personal responsibility, and service to others, with a strong emphasis on service to others. As a member of the NC Senate, I remain committed to use this experience to support our rural communities and working families.”
“I’m troubled by the direction our state is headed. This past session, too often I saw an agenda that set the wrong priorities- an agenda that hurts education and our young people, gives the majority of tax breaks to a select few and hurts our working families, our poor and low income citizens, our seniors and even small businesses. In North Carolina, I believe everyone deserves an opportunity to succeed, regardless of their status in life. I will work to increase teacher salaries to the national average, support small businesses, and support policies to create jobs for middle class families. I will continue to work in a bi-partisan and positive manner to build bridges, reach consensus and not divide our citizens. ”
Senator McLaurin has been a Rotarian for over 30 years and is active in many civic groups. He and his wife, Donna have been married for 38 years and attend First Presbyterian Church of Rockingham, where he is an elder and Sunday School teacher. They are the parents of three children and have two grandchildren.
