♦ The Rowan County Commissioners will meet on Monday at 3 P.M. on March 3rd in the J. Newton Cohen, Sr. Room at the County Administration Building at 130 West Innes Street in Salisbury, N.C.
Highlights of Monday’s meeting:
• A discussion of Vice Chairman Craig Pierce’s proposals concerning animal euthanasia practices at the Rowan County Animal Shelter which includes utilizing only lethal injection starting in April and for the shelter to be certified as “no-kill” by the end of the year. The proposal requests the county should apply to the state’s Humane Society for a grant to fund the removal of the shelter’s gas chamber. With the grant, lethal gas will no longer be employed as an animal euthanasia method. Also included in the Pierce’s proposal is the hiring of a veterinarian to assess animals brought to the shelter for medical care and the sterilization of all adoptable animals prior to going to homes. The sterilization proposal included the costs the costs of the procedure being factored into the adoption fees and a one-time cost to accommodate necessary sterilization equipment to be added to this year’s budget. The county’s animal control adoption center will move into the West End Plaza where it will be operate with extended hours convenient for citizens to view and adopt pets.
• Commissioners will discuss six business leases at the West End Plaza. If approved, Urban Trends and GQ Men’s Wear leases will run through March 3rd, 2019. Leases for Peking Chinese Restaurant, Bee Yang Alterations, and Super Nails will end in 2017. Lisa’s Hair Salon will face renewal again in 2015.
• A discussion of the County Detention Center’s air packs recently deemed surplus equipment due to changes in jail standards.
• Commissioners will examine approving the donation of 13 MSA brand, self-contained breathing apparatuses to the Rowan County Rescue Squad.
• China Grove also is celebrating its 125th anniversary, and commissioners will honor China Grove with a proclamation celebrating its 125th anniversary.
• Authorize Department of Social Services to Apply for Robertson Foundation Grant
• Authorization for Cooperative Extension to Submit Grant Application to Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation, Inc.
