Ronald Axelrod, Salisbury
♦ Why is it that when the Wallaces built the mall on the west side of town, there was no big uproar about pulling business from downtown like there is now? I think this should be dwelt on just to show that if you think you are somebody in Salisbury, and if you act against Salisbury like the Wallace’s did, then it’s okay as long as you keep your money in a downtown bank or continue to give to those charities run by other “somebodies” in Salisbury. It’s time to take the monkey off the commissioners back and put the blame on those who say they care about Salisbury. The truth is they only care about lining their pockets and could care less who shops downtown or who doesn’t. The same could be said for Jake Alexander Blvd, which is loaded with businesses that pull traffic away from downtown. There has been rapid growth there over the past three years, with more to come, but you never hear the city council say Jake Alexander Blvd is bad for business. Council seems to forget the tax base on Jake Alexander Blvd is more vibrant than Main Street. Main St. in any city is supposed to have more to offer to tourists than a street outside of Main and Innes. Salisbury has no beach, no mountains, no tourist attractions to speak of that is worth coming back for the second time. Old buildings are just that, Old Buildings. You’ve seen one old brick, you’ve seen them all.
