Miriam Robinson, Salisbury, N.C.
♦ Salisbury’s crime is completely out of control not only in the West End of our city where the hoodlums had a shootout this morning on Grim Street, its all over Salisbury. There are no where near enough police out on the street because they are understaffed due to cutbacks and firings. The Salisbury Police can hardly keep anybody with their bad rate of pay and the dangers involved. They tell me the average length of stay of a policeman in Salisbury is 7 years. They either quit to hire on elsewhere in other police departments like Mecklenburg for better pay, or they are fired or get wrongful terminations. What they have left are often too inexperienced in a criminal habitat that requires seasoned veterans.
Heaven help anyone who makes a 911 call and needs help in Salisbury. Be a long time a coming even in “8 Block” (uptown Salisbury).
I am so glad the Post added their “Crime Blotter” with all the steady and demoralizing crime being reported daily by the Police department and the Sheriff’s Office in Salisbury from common street beatings and break-ins to purse snatches. Please pray for the Post because employees are saying they are trimming workers down there.
Even though the city has no money to speak of maybe the federal government can come up with some emergency money to restore law and order here. We need more police and good ones.
Something has got to be done about the violence, break-ins, beat downs, heroin, crack, and meth, and the gangs having their run of the city.
Heaven help us all.
