♦ According to a recent City of Salisbury presentation given at City Council:

“Schools in the City of Salisbury are Underperforming

• All schools perform significantly below district and state averages.

• Only 30% of 3rd graders in Salisbury read at grade level.

• Significant achievement gap.

• Only 10% of low income students passed all end of course tests at SHS.

Not an educational problem, but an opportunity problem.”

It is good that people are beginning to wake up and accept a major challenge exists in education instead of denying it.

It is also good that some persons are starting to acknowledge that crime and poverty loom large in Salisbury.  All three will not go away overnight.

In fact it is more likely that poverty, crime, and poor education are liable to grow over the next few years despite efforts to overcome them and that more people will move away which will exacerbate the situation.

Changing illiteracy is a long-term process.  The same goes for poverty and crime.
