♦ Tuesday afternoon, according to Concord Police sources, a Salisbury man identified David Leon Simpson, 32, went on a random simple assault rampage at the Concord Mills Mall, attacking 5 people. Mr. Simpson entered “Jared Vault” at the mall at around 2:45 p.m. and began randomly punching people.
Witnesses allege Mr. Simpson would walk by both men and women and start hitting them much like the infamous “knockout game” scene in Grand Theft Auto. Among those punched were Jared Vault’s manager and an employee. Before exiting the store, the attacker shattered a glass case with a stool. Outside the store Mr. Simpson allegedly punched a teenager, another nearby bystander, and finally capped his afternoon’s streak of simple assaults by punching a female mall security guard. All five sustained minor facial injuries.
In the Concord Mills Mall parking lot Mr. Simpson attempted to steal a vehicle, but failed prior to being tased and arrested by Concord police. He was charged with possession of cocaine, attempted common law robbery, two counts of assault on a female, simple assault, resisting arrest, property damage and disorderly conduct. Mr. Simpson also was served with outstanding Rowan County misdemeanor warrants for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Currently Mr. Simpson is in the Cabarrus County Jail on a $78,000 bond for 11 charges.
