♦ According to school system and Board of Education sources, Salisbury School System teachers will go home with a Apple Mac Book Air laptop computer on June 13th prior to the summer break. Before this occurs, the Rowan County Commissioners will need to approve the digital leasing by the school system. Rowan-Salisbury students will receive Apple Mac Book Air laptops this coming fall while middle school students would bring home iPads next winter and elementary students would receive iPads next spring. Only 3rd graders through 12th graders would be permitted to bring their laptops and iPads home.
All of the laptops and iPads would be leased for 12 million dollars for the next 3 years with existing school system funds. The school system would lease approximately 8,500 Mac Book Air laptops and iPads each. The digital shift is said to be based in part on savings from avoiding paper supplies, printing costs, and the need for school computer labs. Another motive for arming students with laptops and iPads is to ensure they become better able to use digital devices, advance literacy, and increase many areas of knowledge. By making these digital devices available, students will be better able to access many thousands of books and much reading material.
