RFP Article from April 20th: “Salisbury: Woman Strong Armed Thursday at Applebee’s Restaurant on Faith Road Allegedly by Ex-Boyfriend. Muscled Out of $800 Cellphone”:

“A number of popular Salisbury eateries that serve alcoholic beverages appear to attract a fair share of criminal violence including robbery, shootings, knifings, as well as murder. Since early 2017 Go Burrito, Applebee’s, and the Firewater come to mind. If the city were to close any of these establishments, their “clientele” would simply drift to another establishment serving drinks. Some folks have suggested creating a curfew where these eateries, serving drinks, would shut down such operations between 9 P.M. and 10 p.m. Few people venture out at night in Salisbury anyway due to the city’s reputation for gun and knife violence not only in restaurants with bars, but at the city’s much robbed convenience stores.

According to Salisbury Police Department sources Arvilee Gaither, 29, of N. Shaver Street, was the victim of a “robbery-strong arm no weapon”, “assault-simple physical”, and “interfering with emergency communications” at Applebee’s Restaurant at 205 Faith Road on Thursday night. Ms. Gaither allegedly encountered an ex-boyfriend who strong arm robbed her and physically assaulted her in order to steal her $800 cellphone. Ms. Gaither sustained minor injuries during the assault and robbery and could not call 911 dispatch as the result of her cellphone being snatched. Eventually 911 Dispatch was called at 9:13 p.m. and the crimes were reported. Soon Salisbury Police vehicles wheeled into Applebee’s lot.

The Police are currently looking for the suspect.

♦ Salisbury Police sources report the Fish Hut Arcade at 2164 Statesville Blvd, and two of its employees, Mark Foxx and Habid Khan, were victims of an armed robbery early Wednesday morning when two Black men entered the front door of the establishment and held a semi-automatic handgun to the rear of an employees head, demanding cash.  Cash, some $7,220, was quickly handed over to the gunmen who left the Fish Hut and got into a white SUV. The vehicle sped off the lot before officers arrived in numbers.

The 2 gunmen’s faces were partially obscured by hoods and coats. Hopefully some security cam photos will become available.

This is the second time in less than a week that a “gaming arcade” has been tipped over by bandits–the last one was at the Fishzilla arcade cost an employee James Christopher Davis his life.  This morning’s crime was reported to 911 Dispatch at 1:05 a.m.  On the upside no one was hurt.

Prediction: electronic gaming arcades appear to be the next big frequently hit money targets in Salisbury. Move over Salisbury convenience store–Big Daddy’s here.

Salisbury: Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling Wednesday Night at 1119 W. Bank Street. A Long Hot Summer in the City’s West End?

$

RFP Staff

♦ A pile of unsolved murders remain in Salisbury including Ayanna Allen’s in 2016 and Reesa Dawn Trexler’s on N. Shaver Street from way back.  People’s homes are still being shot-up in the underserved West End.  Were the bullets from young men riding through the neighborhood like Saturday night cowboys, guns blazing for some excitement?  Errant bullets from a running gunfight?  Or payback time for a snitch or a disrespect.  Nothing quite like bullets tearing through your walls and shattering your windows while adrenalin pounds through you and your mouth goes dry.  You’re on the floor in crawling through the darkness looking for a safer interior wall.  Where’s your kids? You call for them in a loud whisper.  Another round hits the wall few feet behind you. Someone is calling your son’s name out in the street…

According to Salisbury Police sources Erica Marie Johnston, 33, a resident of Mahaley Avenue, was the victim of an “all other shooting into an occupied property” at 1119 W. Bank Street on Wednesday.  The shooting was said to be from an undetermined firearm.  While mercifully no one was wounded or killed this time, there was damage to the front door ($200) and an interior wall ($100). The crime was reported to 911 Dispatch at 10:16 p.m.

No descriptions of the suspect(s) have been issued.

Jim Sides, Republican Candidate for the Rowan County Commission

♦ Most of you have probably seen the unflattering and untruthful ads in the local newspaper.  You have probably heard the negative ads on the radio station and many of you likely received the beautiful postcard with my picture on it through the mail. In light of all the lies that are being spread about me, I trust you will allow me to clear up some of the misinformation that is being spread.

I have NEVER voted NO to jobs in Rowan County. I welcomed every employer who wanted to come to Rowan County with open arms and thanked them for coming to our county. However, I did vote against incentive packages to get them to come here. If you own or run a business in Rowan County, you should be incensed by the amount of money your commissioners give away to already very successful companies who come here. When the county agrees to give every business the same consideration they give to these large corporations, then I will be less opposed to incentives.

I never put up any petty roadblocks for any business that wanted to come to Rowan County. I did insist that contracts be written to the benefit of Rowan County taxpayers and that they be written with claw-back provisions when a company did not fulfill the requirements of the incentive package they were being given.

I did not vote NO for Gildan Yarns. I did vote against the incentives given to them. I also revealed that they were not adding all new employees when meeting the requirements for hiring. I revealed that they were scalping experienced employees from other local yarn mills to their detriment. I was given this information from executives of these local mills who told me their employees were being called and enticed to leave for employment with Gildan. Sometimes it really hurts to know the truth. But I guess you are not supposed to tell the truth.

MI Windows and Doors did not leave Rowan County because of any pettiness on my account. They left and went to Florida for more incentives, after receiving incentives from Rowan County to move here from another nearby county. In fact, they left before receiving the last check for their incentives from Rowan County. I believe that check was for $65,000. Carl Ford and Chad Mitchell refused to sign the check and to my knowledge they were not paid.

The “great progress” that Rowan County has made since I left office in 2014 is not attributable to the current board of commissioners, even though they are claiming credit for it. You can thank President Trump and the NC Legislature for most of that growth and the rest just came naturally. Anyway, the kind of growth the current commission is pushing for is unnatural growth, which is like a cancer and will eat away at the financial resources of Rowan County and its citizens.

I was not guilty of bickering or bullying while I was in office. I fought, and fought hard for the citizens of Rowan County, and worked to see that their best interests were first and foremost. This made a lot of special interest people angry, and for that they want to accuse me of bickering and bullying? Come on, Elrod!

And what was my poor performance? I fought to get “In God We Trust” placed on the county building. I fought to change county ordinances to keep perverts out of our parks and away from our children. I stood firm in resisting the ACLU when they threatened the lawsuit to stop commissioners from praying publicly before their meetings. Everyone else seems to think this is a constitutional issue of free speech.

I agree, but it is also a moral issue. The question is, “how much further will we allow these fringe groups to push God out of our government and our lives?” I fought to protect the property rights of Rowan County citizens and to reduce the burden of property taxes on them. If I was guilty of poor performance, it is only in the eyes of the beholder.

I was never wrong about job opportunities for our citizens in a free and competitive marketplace. I want every citizen who wants a job to have one. But what is right about the county taxpayers paying for jobs for people who do not work for them?

Rowan County gave Duke Energy almost $7 million dollars in incentives and what did they get in return? Electric rates have increased over the years and now they want to burden electric users with the cost of coal ash removal, while they pay their CEO more than $21 million dollars per year. Maybe that makes sense to you, but it certainly does not to me. Ask the citizens who have endured the tainted water for many years what they think about it.

So, the choice is yours. You can believe the garbage that comes in your mail. You can believe the garbage that the local newspaper prints (for money). You can believe the garbage that is spewed over the radio. Or, you can believe the truth, that in spite of the many faults he may have, Jim Sides is not quite as bad as some people tell you he is.

Thanks for Your Time, Jim Sides

Letter-to-the-Editor: The Salisbury Syndicate (Cabal) and Their Political Advertisements

$

Joe Coladarci, Salisbury Ex-Patriate

♦ Four years ago I was one of 9 running in the Republican primary. It was a very interesting experience as I was attacked by people I never met. The local print newspaper allowed anonymous posts that called me a homophobe and a raciest. These false attacks were nothing compared to the viscous attacks launched by the Salisbury Syndicate (Cabal) on my running mate Jim Sides. The Salisbury Syndicate spent over $40,000 in advertising to defeat Jim Sides in the primary. The money was spent to defame Jim was probably 10 times more than what Jim spent on his own campaign.

Fast forward to 2018 and Jim is running to help Rowan County again. The same Salisbury Syndicate (Cabal) has raised its ugly head to distort and destroy a good man’s reputation again. Radio ads, direct hack mail pieces, and print ads against a very good and capable man and also Craig Pierce and Mike Julian both exceptional men.

Question: why would the Salisbury Syndicate (Cabal) spend 10’s of thousands of dollars to defeat essentially one man?

The present incumbents Greg Edds, Judy Klusman, and Jim Greene (KEG) have done nothing–zero to help the County, they have squandered the West End Plaza to assist the Salisbury Syndicate (Cabal). The KEG has promoted the Thread Trail and gave up control of our county to an unelected group that wanted to seize land from its rightful owners.

Greg Edds is famous for saying “You gotta to Fake it till you Make It.”  The insurance agent has been faking it for the last 4 years and he has to go. The other two are rubber stamps for the Edds the Salisbury Syndicate’s lap dog who wanted to build a hotel in the West End Plaza parking lot.  Seriously!

Why would a group of businessman spend upwards of $40,000 to defeat one guy? Why do they need the Klusman, Edds, and Greene to stay in power? What is their payoff for their investment in these three?  In the four years they’ve been in office Salisbury has sunk below the horizon in a blaze of gunfire, sirens, and a municipal broadband that “turned the corner and kept on going with the city’s money”.  Salisbury is harming the county’s reputation big time.

I highly recommend voters go out and fill those little ovals for Jim Sides, Craig Pierce, and Mike Julian during the primary election.

♦ Salisbury, N.C. has quite few drivers out there who drive with revoked licenses or none at all.  Every so often they become involved in dangerous high-speed pursuits to avoid arrest.  Quite a few drive while intoxicated and endanger other motorists and pedestrians.  Here is one such story.

According to Salisbury Police sources Ted Geter, 61, a convicted forger living on N. Salisbury Avenue in Spencer,  was arrested on N. Long Street Tuesday morning after allegedly eluding a license checkpoint on N. Long near Lauren Street and driving away .  Salisbury Police gave pursuit, catching up with Geter after he wrecked his car on the 400 block of N. Long Street.  Geter got out and started running away, but officers soon overtook him.  Handcuffed, Jeter was taken into custody and would shortly find himself under a secured $30,000 bond in the Rowan County Detention Center.
