Jim Sides, Republican Candidate for the Rowan County Commission
Most of you have probably seen the unflattering and untruthful ads in the local newspaper. You have probably heard the negative ads on the radio station and many of you likely received the beautiful postcard with my picture on it through the mail. In light of all the lies that are being spread about me, I trust you will allow me to clear up some of the misinformation that is being spread.
I have NEVER voted NO to jobs in Rowan County. I welcomed every employer who wanted to come to Rowan County with open arms and thanked them for coming to our county. However, I did vote against incentive packages to get them to come here. If you own or run a business in Rowan County, you should be incensed by the amount of money your commissioners give away to already very successful companies who come here. When the county agrees to give every business the same consideration they give to these large corporations, then I will be less opposed to incentives.
I never put up any petty roadblocks for any business that wanted to come to Rowan County. I did insist that contracts be written to the benefit of Rowan County taxpayers and that they be written with claw-back provisions when a company did not fulfill the requirements of the incentive package they were being given.
I did not vote NO for Gildan Yarns. I did vote against the incentives given to them. I also revealed that they were not adding all new employees when meeting the requirements for hiring. I revealed that they were scalping experienced employees from other local yarn mills to their detriment. I was given this information from executives of these local mills who told me their employees were being called and enticed to leave for employment with Gildan. Sometimes it really hurts to know the truth. But I guess you are not supposed to tell the truth.
MI Windows and Doors did not leave Rowan County because of any pettiness on my account. They left and went to Florida for more incentives, after receiving incentives from Rowan County to move here from another nearby county. In fact, they left before receiving the last check for their incentives from Rowan County. I believe that check was for $65,000. Carl Ford and Chad Mitchell refused to sign the check and to my knowledge they were not paid.
The “great progress” that Rowan County has made since I left office in 2014 is not attributable to the current board of commissioners, even though they are claiming credit for it. You can thank President Trump and the NC Legislature for most of that growth and the rest just came naturally. Anyway, the kind of growth the current commission is pushing for is unnatural growth, which is like a cancer and will eat away at the financial resources of Rowan County and its citizens.
I was not guilty of bickering or bullying while I was in office. I fought, and fought hard for the citizens of Rowan County, and worked to see that their best interests were first and foremost. This made a lot of special interest people angry, and for that they want to accuse me of bickering and bullying? Come on, Elrod!
And what was my poor performance? I fought to get “In God We Trust” placed on the county building. I fought to change county ordinances to keep perverts out of our parks and away from our children. I stood firm in resisting the ACLU when they threatened the lawsuit to stop commissioners from praying publicly before their meetings. Everyone else seems to think this is a constitutional issue of free speech.
I agree, but it is also a moral issue. The question is, “how much further will we allow these fringe groups to push God out of our government and our lives?” I fought to protect the property rights of Rowan County citizens and to reduce the burden of property taxes on them. If I was guilty of poor performance, it is only in the eyes of the beholder.
I was never wrong about job opportunities for our citizens in a free and competitive marketplace. I want every citizen who wants a job to have one. But what is right about the county taxpayers paying for jobs for people who do not work for them?
Rowan County gave Duke Energy almost $7 million dollars in incentives and what did they get in return? Electric rates have increased over the years and now they want to burden electric users with the cost of coal ash removal, while they pay their CEO more than $21 million dollars per year. Maybe that makes sense to you, but it certainly does not to me. Ask the citizens who have endured the tainted water for many years what they think about it.
So, the choice is yours. You can believe the garbage that comes in your mail. You can believe the garbage that the local newspaper prints (for money). You can believe the garbage that is spewed over the radio. Or, you can believe the truth, that in spite of the many faults he may have, Jim Sides is not quite as bad as some people tell you he is.
Thanks for Your Time, Jim Sides
