Salisbury: Does Anyone Believe that Fision AKA Hotwire Can Show a Profit in Salisbury’s Saturated Field of Private Broadband Providers?

RFP Staff

♦ Does Anyone Seriously Believe that Fision AKA Hotwire Communications Can Show a Profit in Salisbury’s Super Saturated Field of Private Broadband Providers?

Ponder it for a few moments.  Can anyone seriously believe Fision, a virtual no name in Salisbury, N.C., is going head to head with Super Giant Spectrum, the 2nd largest Internet provider in the United States who lowballs and out markets their completion all over the United States.  Surely you’ve seen ads everywhere on Facebook, Newspapers, on TV, mailers–you name it.  Not to mention Spectrum’s highly regarded internet.  Fision who?  Alone Spectrum will crush Fision.

But other overwhelming factors insure Fision will never dream of making a profit in a city, where 25% of it’s population falls below the poverty line and lacks spendable income. Most can’t afford Fision.

Keep in mind Fision can’t compete with giants DISH-TV, AT&T, and DirecTV nor can they stand toe to toe with internet over smartphones.  Where’s this profit going to arrive from?  Certainly not from TV where now over 60% or more of folks are getting their TV FREE from DTV over Omni-directional DTV antennas, rabbit ears, and IPTV enabled devices like ROKU.

Should we even mention cheapo TV nearly ala carte from streaming services over ROKU, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Chromecast?

And most people use their smartphones to communicate or employ very inexpensive super performing VOIP phones such as MagicJackGo (The nations leading VOIP phone provider), Ooma, Google Voice (FREE) and Walmart’s Basic Talk.

Is there a dead rat laying bloated in the road now?

Salisbury: Whitney Krider Busted at the Happy Traveler Inn Wednesday A.M. for Alleged Felony Breaking and Entering and Felony Larceny

♦ The uptick in break-ins into homes, buildings, businesses, and vehicles by revolving door criminals continues unabated in Salisbury.  It is a major concern for persons living in all of the city’s communities.  Frequently these crimes are fueled by addiction to opioids and sometimes meth.  In recent years women, operating as lone wolves or paired with males, are becoming more involved in burglaries and break-ins.

According to Salisbury Police sources Whitney Paige Krider, 29, of Salisbury was arrested at the Happy Traveler Inn, the city’s premier “fun-tel” at 1420 E. Innes Street and a Motel that deserves to be on the National Historic Registry for being an outstanding example of 50’s style architecture. Krider was arrested on Wednesday at 2:20 a.m. and charged for allegedly “breaking and entering-building” (felony) and for “larceny after breaking/enter” (felony).  We will provide more specifics on where and when these two felonies occurred as well as what was stolen as soon as the Salisbury Police Department puts up the Incident Report for Krider’s alleged crimes.

Salisbury: Forcible Entry Sunday on E. Innes St. Burglar Trots off with $815 in Valuables

♦ Every day of the week is a big day for break-ins and burglaries in Salisbury.  No community is immune from it.  It’s even happening in the historic district and the country club, but not showing up much in police reports.  Perhaps as more people unload their homes and depart the city, the Country Club will become more of a lonely island surrounded by the sound of breaking glass and crunching doorframes.  The day is coming when this formerly upper crust neighborhood will become the city’s Warsaw Ghetto. Rest assured Salisbury’s large criminal element will be finding their way into the club.  The clock is ticking.  Alleged positive thinking can only be spread so thin.

Salisbury Police sources report that Helena Davis, 54, living at 1902 E. Innes Street was the victim of a “burglary-forcible entry” at her home on sometime Sunday morning.  The burglar carted of a 39 inch flat screen Element TV (valued at $300), 30 pieces of assorted jewelry (valued at $500), and jewelry box (valued at $15).  The total haul was $815.

The burglar, who bodily forced their way into the home, left broken glass and footprints as evidence near the entry.  The crime was reported to 911 Dispatch at 10:31 a.m. and brought officers to the front door.

No arrests made so far or suspects named yet.

The Happy Traveler Inn, Salisbury’s Mid-Century Modern Architectural Masterpiece and Fun-Tel, is Destined for the National Historic Registry

♦ After much discussion the Editor and Staff of the Rowan Free Press decided it was time the city of Salisbury, North Carolina step up and recognized The Happy Traveler Inn, the city’s premier Fun-Tel and 1950’s Mid-Century Modern Architectural Masterpiece gracing 1420 E. Innes Street. Truly it is the glory of the atomic age and we believe it’s time our local historic preservation groups and societies got behind this magnificent structure’s entry into the National Register of Historic Places.  Destiny is hammering at the door of architectural history.

El Magnifico “The Happy Traveler Inn” 1402 E. Innes Street, Salisbury, NC:

The decrepit eyesore and flophouse, not opened to the public since 1963, the Empire Hotel has taken up valuable space in the 200 block of South Main and needs to be torn down.  It’s blighted Jules Vern style hideousness is an offense to the eye.  Salisbury’s Downtown desperately needs a parking lot and to be done with this albatross.  The Happy Traveler Inn on the other hand continues doing business since it opened in the 50’s.  Today it’s assessed value is $1,099,110 while the Empire Hotel was assessed at $1,018,832. Shamefully it is exempt from payment of real property taxes because it has remained empty since it was closed 1963.

It appears the City and DSI would’ve been more prudent to have invested in this 1950’s Mid-Century Modern architectural masterpiece instead of a dilapidated flophouse.  But who said city hall or DSI could beat two rocks together and get a spark?  Take a ride through Downtown Salisbury with your doors locked and semi-automatic pistol in your lap. You’ll know all you’ll need to know about blight and a lack of human lifeforms.

♦ Salisbury is a stop on the I-85 “human trafficking” corridor where missing U.S. teenage girls, women from Mexico, Central America, Asia, and Eastern Europe are forced into sexual slavery. According to law enforcement and organizations, who battle the human trafficking across North Carolina, a number of signs exist that a woman is engaged in sexual servitude. Branding with a branding iron or a tattoo needle are common. These brands most often appear on the nape of the female’s neck, the side of the neck, the upper back, and in some instances on the calf. Most frequent brands or tattoos encountered are barcodes, hearts containing dollar signs, a number, or the pimp’s name.

♦ According to Salisbury Police and Rowan County Sheriff’s Office sources the First National Bank at 322 E. Innes Street was held up today at 12:30 p.m. when a robber walked into the bank and robbed a bank employee of a yet undisclosed amount of cash.  The robber, armed with a knife, fled the bank parking lot in a Toyota pick-up truck with a pregnant woman behind the wheel.

In very short order Salisbury Police and Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies entered into a high-speed pursuit of the suspects’ pick-up truck down I-85 at speeds in excess of 100 miles-per-hour.  The pursuit continued into Davidson County where officers and deputies were able to disable the fleeing pick-up truck with “stop sticks” which flattened the tires on Mendenhall Street in Thomasville.  The male suspect jumped from the pick-up and attempted to run into the Anderson RC Hobby Shop where he was met by the co-owner Wesley Anderson who attempted to block him from entering the store.  The robber turned on Anderson and stabbed him multiple times, once near his heart.  Anderson is expected to recover. The robber was blocked from entering the store by several citizens holding the door closed.

Officers attempted to Taser the robber, but with little effect.  At that point a Salisbury Policeman, believing others were in immanent danger, shot the suspect.  The suspect’s condition is unknown at this time.  No officers were injured during the arrest.  According to reports the pregnant woman, who drove the pick-up truck, was taken to an area hospital because she appeared to be going into premature labor.

At this time neither of the suspects names were released.  The charges against them have not yet disclosed. Upon their release from the hospital they will be arrested.

Thursday afternoon the Salisbury Police reported that a body cam video was reviewed showing that the officer, who fired his weapon, behaved in accordance with police procedures. Because an officer involved shooting was involved, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will review the shooting. The officer was placed on administrative leave.

Letter-to-the-Editor: Chuck Hughes on the Need for Metal Detectors in the Rowan-Salisbury School System

$
0
0

Chuck Hughes, Salisbury, N.C.

For at least a dozen years one school system after another has discussed school safety issues. In Rowan County the miniscule issue of pepper spray sent the county into a tizzy.

Since school shootings appear to be happening across the U.S.A. almost every few weeks, the issue of keeping our own Rowan-Salisbury students and staff safe is an issue to be taken seriously.
The tragedies at Parkland High School and elsewhere demonstrates the need for protecting our wards. Gun ownership is not the problem–its been with us since our country was founded. School shootings have only become an issue in recent years. More resource officers, something the Rowan-Salisbury Schools did address, will only diminish the damage after shots are fired since no prompt response exists until the shooter becomes active.

I believe many school boards and school administrations nationwide have tipped-toed around the one sure primary step to protect our children in schools. That is to keep guns outside the school buildings. This can be accomplished only by controlling entry and exits using metal detectors. Metal detectors are being now finding there way into many city schools across the country.

I don’t make this recommendation for metal detectors lightly. The argument against metal detectors is that they involve time and money. However, the safety of our children shouldn’t be held hostage by time and finances.
