♦ The Forsyth County Commission voted unanimously Monday to seek relief from a Federal Court Order halting sectarian prayers at their meetings. The county commission will have their county attorney Davida Martin work on getting the Federal court order overturned. The Forsyth county commissioners desire to return to their earlier prayer policy where they invited clergy from various faiths to provide the opening prayer. In 2010 a Federal judge issued a court order prohibiting the commission from allowing sectarian prayers at the start of meetings.
Last week the United States Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 that Greece, N.Y. did not violate the U.S. Constitution by allowing clergy to deliver Christian prayer at the start of their meetings due to the fact that Greece, N.Y. employed an inclusive invitation policy. Its said that Forsyth County’s previous prayer policy is virtually identical to Greece, N.Y’s policy.
The Rowan County Commissioners and their attorneys will soon announce how Greece, N.Y.’s Supreme Court ruling will influence their prayer policy.
