♦ There seems to be a real disconnect between downtown business owners and their “cause”. 81.24 cents special district taxation, on top of city and county tax, and they’re upset about the 1/2 cent “mall tax”? Seriously.
Is this really about Downtown Salisbury’s ONLY’s sense of entitlement that our county should utilize every available space it can in the downtown, instead of the West End Plaza. “Dilapidated” more accurately describes the buildings they presume the county should upfit downtown, instead of the West End Plaza. They should be more honest about their agenda-driven crusade, instead of making it a taxation issue.
If the West End Plaza, built in 1987, is “dilapidated” as its critics repeatedly and falsely claim, and not worth any renovations, then WHY should legislators use NC taxpayers’ hard-earned coin to subsidize the renovation of far older structures in this state?
Salisbury’s crumbling infrastructure is not only “old”, but the 81.24 cent MSD (Municipal Special District) tax is also hamstringing property owners with crippling annual tax debt.
Why don’t the historic preservation folks go after Salisbury for a tax CUT, instead of going after State legislators for a tax INCREASE for the majority of taxpayers, to give them a tax credit for rehabilitating “OLD” buildings even more ancient than the so-called “dilapidated” West End Plaza?
