♦ Three inmates Quentin Mathis, Khari McClelland and Darius Smotherson were charged with assaulting a sheriff’s deputy at the Rowan County Jail in Salisbury, N.C.
The assault happened when officers searched cells in one of the jail pods. The three inmates were secured for the day when they began pounding on the door and demanding to use the bathroom. When they were allowed to use the facilities, the three began to verbally abuse the officers and then assault them as they were being led back into their cells.
Sheriff’s deputy Jamie Travis suffered a broken nose, cuts and a concussion from the beating.
Khari McClelland is one of the four suspects held in the murder of Marcus Kauffman, a firefighter, killed a short time after he was married.
Darius Smotherson is charged with murder of 17-year-old Daniel Cooper, a Kannapolis high school student.
Quentin Mathis is charged with attempted murder when he attempted to shoot two people in a Mooresville Dragway restroom 3 years ago.
The 3 inmates involved in the assault were given an additional bond of $50,000 each and remain locked up at the Rowan County Jail.
