♦ Today millions of televisions across the globe will be tuned into the 146th running of the Belmont Stakes (6:52 p.m. NBC), the third race of championship horse racing’s “Triple Crown”. They will be watching to see if California Chrome can be the first thoroughbred since Affirmed won the Triple Crown back in 1978. Winning the third leg of the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes has eluded quite a few championship thoroughbreds. But not the immortal Secretariat who won the Triple Crown by an incredible 31 lengths in 1973. Here is a list of the only championship thoroughbreds ever to win the Triple Crown. Below the Triple Crown Winners list is a video of the greatest single performance by any horse at the Belmont Stakes since it began 146 years ago. Anyone watching Secretariat’s performance on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” that day will likely never forget it. I vividly recall Secretariat moving further and further away from a field that included Sham. In the end Secretariat was an effortless and legendary 31 lengths ahead.
