Salisbury, NC (September 10, 2014) – Educational and business leaders in our community are excited to be joining forces in presenting the third Community Forum:
LITERACY SUMMIT
Community Forum

The goal of the first Community Forum was to create a shared vision for Rowan County among business leaders, elected officials, citizens and countywide stakeholders. Discussions and a survey conducted through the first Community Forum identified Education as the #1 priority in Rowan County in building a strong community and attracting new businesses to our area. The second community forum welcomed Rowan-Salisbury School Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody, who unfolded the district’s new Strategic Plan that focuses on Literacy and Student Engagement.
A strong foundation in literacy has long been identified as the basic necessity for building a successful educational and business environment and this is what remains the goal for Rowan County. Learning the part that each individual plays in building that foundation is both exciting and rewarding. Working together provides a win-win for every citizen and for the future of our community.
Guiding the Literacy Summit are the dynamic educational leaders of our community:

Dr. Vergel Lattimore, Hood Theological Seminary President
Dr. Carol Spalding, Rowan Cabarrus Community College President
Dr. Jimmy Jenkins, Livingstone College President
Dr. Lynn Moody, Rowan-Salisbury Schools Superintendent
In addition, there will be an invited guest panel featuring Mr. Isaac McKissick from Spartanburg School District and Rev. Ryan McJimpsey from Bountiful Blessings Church.
At the Literacy Summit, leaders will be looking at our county’s history, demographics, challenges, visions, and ending with a “Call to Action.” There is an exciting part that each citizen in our county can play in building a strong foundation of Literacy. With the “Call to Action,” everyone will have the opportunity to join together in creating and encouraging the Literacy and Educational growth for our community. One challenge will be for 100 churches and businesses to create a welcoming homework center, with Internet accessibility and monitored supervision, for students across our county. Image the visibility this would create in encouraging and promoting Literacy across our community.
