♦ Friday, Trishia Bassett, 36, of 335 Happy Lake Road in Rowan County, alleged a Sheriff’s deputy groped her. That evening a sheriff’s deputy checked the registration of a black car he followed on Grover Road. The vehicle belonged to Bassett who the deputy was familiar with from her involvement in a previous case.
The deputy followed the black car and noted it was occupied by a man and a woman. The car ran off the road a ways ahead and then came back on. Switching off his blue light, the deputy still following the car, noted it suddenly turned into a driveway at 827 Glover Road. Immediately the driver’s side door opened and the driver started running.
After radioing for assistance, the deputy stepped over to the black car to speak with female passenger who turned out to be Trishia Bassett. The deputy told Bassett to put up her hands, but she refused, saying she could not be arrested because she did nothing wrong. The deputy told Bassett she was not being arrested, but he needed to detain her while he investigated the driver who fled the scene.
Bassett became more and more agitated with the deputy before she pulled away. The deputy told Bassett she was now being arrested for resisting police.
Placing Bassett on the ground beside the patrol car, he placed her in handcuffs and patted her down for possible weapons.
Bassett raised her voice, yelling that the deputy “felt her up.” She continued to carry on before the deputy attempted to move her back to his car. She kicked at him and tried to escape.
Soon other deputies arrived to help, but Bassett continued to scream, accusing the deputies of looking at her in inappropriate ways.
After much struggle and loud screaming, Bassett was delivered to the magistrate’s office in Salisbury. She continued her accusations, then told the deputy she knew where his family lived. Even at the magistrate’s office she continued acting disrespectfully. Bassett was charged with assault on a government official and resist, obstruct, and delay. She was jailed and later released on $2500 bond.
The driver of the black car was not found.
